Splitting consistency group pairs with At-Time Split

You can split the BC Z pairs in a consistency group at a specified time. This is done using At-Time
Split. BCM is required to run the operation.
With PPRC, you can split the pairs in a consistency group though without a specified time. For
more information, see the instructions in

“Pair operations using PPRC” (page 70)

.

Prerequisite information

Make sure to change the status of pairs in the same consistency group according to the copy
group.

On registering split time:

When you register the Split time, you can only perform Suspend or Delete pair operations.
Split time is rejected if you perform Add Pair, Split, or Resync operation. If you want to
perform one of these operations, reset the registration of the Split time.

The Split time you specified is reset when power is switched off.

The operation is performed when the read/write request—with a time stamp past the
specified Split time—is received. The Split operation can be delayed if you do not issue
a read/write request. If I/O does not occur, the storage system timer performs the split
operation.

If the Split time is registered, and if there is a pair in the consistency group that cannot
be split completely during the Split operation, the status of this pair remains the same as
before the Split operation.

Before consistency group split a second time, verify that status of all the pairs in the same
consistency group is changed to the status which is specified by the YKEWAIT command.
For detailed information about monitoring status changes for copy pairs in a specified copy
group using the YKEWAIT command, see the Business Continuity Manager User’s Guide.

For more information splitting pairs with the about At-Time Split option on pairs shared with
Cnt Ac-S Z or Cnt Ac-J Z volumes, see

“The At-Time Split for shared volumes” (page 19)

.

1.

Define a consistency group for the BC Z pairs that you will split using At-Time Split.

2.

Specify the consistency group as a BCM copy group, or register the split time.
When you specify the copy group, select the split type: Quick Split or Steady Split. When you
register the split time, the split type is Quick Split.

3.

Specify the consistency group split option, then create the pairs.

4.

Split the pairs in the consistency group. The pairs are split simultaneously.

Suspending pair creation

Suspending the creation of pairs (initial copy to the T-VOL) changes the pair status to
Suspend/SUSPER. The T-VOL continues accepting write I/O operations from the S-VOL and marks
the entire S-VOL track as difference data. Resynchronizing a suspended pair changes the pair
status to Resync/PENDING and copies the entire S-VOL to the T-VOL. While the pairresync operation
for a split pair can be very fast, the pairresync operation for a suspended pair takes as long as
the initial copy operation.
The storage system automatically suspends a pair when it detects an error condition related to an
update copy operation, or when it cannot keep the pair mirrored.
