Thin Provisioning Z and Smart Tiers Z

You can use Thin Provisioning Z (THP Z) and Smart Tiers Z (Smart Z) volumes as BC Z P-VOLs and
S-VOLs. THP Z and Smart Z volumes can be used as BC Z reserved volumes. The following
restrictions apply:

THP Z and Smart Z volumes should be used for both the BC Z P-VOL and S-VOLs, rather than
one or the other.

If you create a THP Z or Smart Z volume with only the P-VOL, or only the S-VOL, you cannot
perform the Quick Restore operation.

To perform the Quick Restore, both P-VOL and S-VOLs must be shared with THP Z or Smart Z
volumes.

You cannot perform BC Z pair operations while increasing THP Z or Smart Z volume capacity.

Resource Partition

You can specify volumes in a Resource Partition resource group as BC Z P-VOLs and S-VOLs.
However, ensure the resource group is assigned to one of your user groups. The resource group
must be assigned to a user group for which your user account has privileges.

NOTE:

For mainframe systems, you can only access one resource group from a host. Therefore,

ensure that the resource group volumes you use as P-VOLs and S-VOLs are in the group that can
be accessed by the host.

For more information about Resource Partition, see the HP XP P9000 Provisioning for Mainframe
Systems User Guide

Continuous Access Synchronous Z

You can share Cnt Ac-S Z volumes with BC Z volumes.

You can share BC Z P-VOLs and S-VOLs with Cnt Ac-S Z P-VOLs and S-VOLs. However, you
cannot share a BC Z S-VOL with a Cnt Ac-S Z S-VOL.

When you share a BC Z P-VOL with a Cnt Ac-S Z S-VOL, the write operation on the Cnt Ac-S
Z P-VOL takes more time. This is especially true when the BC Z pair is in the V-Split status
because of the copying time needed for the BC Z pair.

NOTE:

When using PPRC, the Split status cannot be distinguished from the V-Split status.

Complete the following:

Using the CSUSPEND command, specify MFS00 for the PRIM parameter to perform the
Steady Split operation. In this case the pair status will not be V-Split.

Use the RWC to check whether the pair status is Split or V-Split.

You can perform the Quick Restore operation on a BC Z pair when the Cnt Ac-S Z pair is
suspended.

The BC Z P-VOL can be shared with Cnt Ac-S Z volumes in a 3 data center configuration. For
more information, see

“Sharing volumes in a 3-Cnt Ac-S Z/Cnt Ac-J Z DC cascade

configuration” (page 30)

.

You can use the At-Time Split operation on BC Z pairs whose volumes are shared with Cnt
Ac-S Z S-VOLs. For more information, see

“The At-Time Split for shared volumes” (page 19)

.

For more information about sharing BC Z and Cnt Ac-S Z volumes, see the section on sharing
volumes with BC Z in the HP XP P9000 Continuous Access Synchronous for Mainframe Systems
User Guide
