7 Volume Retention operations

Use spreadsheets to configure access to or get current access attributes for LDEV and to set or
change access attributes for mainframe system volumes. You use CFL in Vol Ret Z to process
spreadsheets.

Prerequisites

Vol Ret Z must be installed before you can use spreadsheets in Vol Ret Z. If you do not have Vol
Ret Z installed and you attempt to process a spreadsheet, an error message will not appear and
the spreadsheet will not be processed.

Volume Retention spreadsheet tasks

You can do the following tasks using spreadsheets in Vol Ret Z:

Save the current LDEV access attributes to a spreadsheet.

Set or change access attributes for mainframe system volumes.

Example: Using CFL-based spreadsheets in Volume Retention

You, as the system administrator, want to change the LDEV access attributes to Read/write
depending on business hours. You create two spreadsheets: Ptn_1 for LDEV1 and Ptn_2 for
LDEV2.

Ptn_1

contains the read/write attribute for LDEV1 and the protect attribute for LDEV2. Ptn_2

contains the read only attribute for LDEV1 and the read/write attribute.

If you apply Ptn_1 to the storage system, the hosts can read and write to LDEV1. If you apply
Ptn_2

to the storage system, the hosts can do the following:

Read data from LDEV1

Read and write data to LDEV2

The following figure shows the scenario:
