For example, if you set the tiering policy level on a V-VOL(THP V-VOL) to a tier with a high I/O
speed, the data is always stored on the high-speed tier when relocating tiers. Therefore, when you
use that V-VOL(THP V-VOL), regardless of the actual quantity of the I/O load, you can always get
high-speed responses (see

(page 95)

).

You can set the tiering policy level to one of six tiering levels (see

(page 95)

).

You can designate a tiering level or multiple tiering policies when creating the THP V-VOL. Use
the Edit LDEVs window to change the tiering policy settings. When relocation operates, the related
tiering level that is set to the THP V-VOL is used to relocate its data to the desired tier or tiers.

The tiering policy does not own pool capacity. Pool capacity is shared.

Tiering policy examples

The following figure shows an example of data allocation when the default tiering policy level All
is specified. Pages in the THP V-VOL are relocated to any tier.

The following figure shows an example of data allocation when setting the tiering policy to level
1 (see Level 1 in

(page 96)

). In this case, pages in the THP V-VOL are relocated to tier 1, and are

not relocated to other tiers.

The setting of a tiering level for a THP V-VOL is optional. If one is not selected, the default is the
