Communicating computer-to-computer (ad-hoc) without an
access point

A computer-to-computer (ad-hoc) network is one in which a local network is
created only by the wireless devices themselves, with no other central controller
or access point. Each device communicates directly with other devices in the
network. You can set up an ad-hoc network easily at home, either with an
network key for added security or without a key. If a network was created with an
network (or encryption) key, then no one can access that network without the key.

To set up a computer-to-computer (ad-hoc) network

1

Turn on the Wireless LAN switch located on the left side of the computer.
The Wireless LAN indicator on the bottom left front portion of the computer
lights up. See “Turning On Wireless LAN functionality” for more
information.

2

Click Start on the taskbar, point to Connect To, and click Wireless Network
Connection. The Connect to Wireless Lan window appears.

3

Click Advanced. The Wireless Network Connection Properties window
appears.
