6 Inserting the new connecting piece

■

Insert the connecting piece (38-2) into the housing (38-4) in such
a way that the connector 1 is on top and the three pins of the
connecting piece fit into the corresponding recesses on the hous-
ing.

■

Reattach the union nut (38-1) onto the coupling and tighten by
hand..

7 Connecting and conditioning the suppressor

■

Reconnect all capillaries of the suppressor to the IC system.

■

Before switching the suppressor over for the first time, rinse the
three suppressor units with solution for 5 minutes.

5.12.1

Replacing the CO

2

adsorption cartridge

The 6.2837.000 CO

2

adsorption cartridge (26-4) must be replaced regu-

larly. This is because of blockages and losses in capacity.

Jamming
Moisture can block the CO

2

adsorption cartridge. This is revealed by a

change in color of the cartridge material (the orange part becomes color-
less). As the air flow is reduced, the vacuum becomes lower. To protect
the CO

2

adsorption cartridge, an H

2

O adsorption cartridge (26-7) is instal-

led upstream. Regular regeneration (see Chapter 5.12.2, page 87) of
the H

2

O adsorption cartridge extends the service life of the CO

2

adsorp-

tion cartridge.

Capacity loss
The adsorption capacity of the CO

2

adsorption cartridge is limited.

Depending on the period of operation and laboratory environment, the
adsorption capacity will diminish over time. This is manifested in a rising
baseline (as more CO

2

reaches the detector).

5.12.2

Regenerating the H

2

O adsorption cartridge

The function of the H

2

O adsorption cartridge is to protect the CO

2

adsorp-

tion cartridge against moisture. The service life of the H

2

O adsorption car-

tridge depends on the moisture content of the ambient air. Moisture
reduces the capacity of the H

2

O adsorption cartridge (which can be

observed by a change in color). Before the color changes in the entire fill-
ing material (from orange to colorless, with Fluka Order No. 94098), the
H

2

O adsorption cartridge should be regenerated (see leaflet). The filling

material is replaced during regeneration:
