Overview
Introduction
This chapter introduces some of the concepts of data capture and INDICIUS.
What is Data Capture and What is INDICIUS?
Automatic data capture converts paper-based documents into electronic files. The
resulting files contain clean, verified, classified and quickly accessible information
which can be routed to key people, stored in database repositories or archived.
What are the Components of a Typical Data Capture Solution?
There are five key components to a data capture solution:
ƒ Document Scanner and Driver Software: To take an electronic image of the
document to be processed and store it to disk.
ƒ Recognition Software: To automatically recognize and read the bulk of the
machine and handprint from the document image.
ƒ Keying Software: To allow users to key data that could not be recognized
automatically or to correct items that the automatic process was uncertain
about.
ƒ Export Process: To format data and push it out (along with the image) to a
database or EDM system.
ƒ Statistics Reporting: To measure system performance.
