The

stitch

most

commonly

used

in

applique

is

a

plain

/jg~'/ag,

closely

spaced to form a satin stitch. The width
of this stitch can be varied to accom­

modate fabrics of different weaves and

textures. Other stitch patterns can also

be used.

Preparation
Make a test sample to decide which of

the

foltov/ing

metfiods

is

the

most

appropriate for your fabric and design.

Mark design on piece of fabric to be

appliguéd. Cut out design leaving about
2

cm

(3./4

inch)

margin

all

around.

Position

the

design.

Baste

it

to

the

fabric.

Method 1

e Select pattern and adjust stitch width

for

desired

applique

stitch.

Adjust

stitch length to fine setting, between

1 and 0.'

» Follow the outer edge of tiro design

v^ith a decorative stitcfi.

Trim av.'ay the excess fabric on the

outer edges of the stitching.

Method 2
e Select straight stitch,

Outline the entire desigrr with a sirort

stitch.

» Trim raw edges to the stitching and

remove basting.

e Select stitch pattern and stitch width

desired, and set stitch length on a
satin stitcii setting for a closely
spaced stitch, between 1 and 0.

outline. This method will produce a

smooth overedged finish, witfr no raw

edges to be trimmed after stitching.
