Information about fabrics, leather and

vinyl

Most fabrics are woven or knitted but may also be

non-woven. Other types of material can be sewn too,
like leather, leather imitations and vinyl.

Woven fabrics are generally non-elastic, both

lengthwise and crosswise, but are elastic on the bias
(diagonal). If you are sewing lengthwise or crosswise,
you can use non-stretch stitches, e.g. straight stitching.

When sewing on the bias, e.g. crotch seams or sleeve

insertion, sew as for stretch fabric, i.e. with stretch
stitches.

Some woven fabrics may stretch lengthwise and/or

crosswise depending on whether they are woven with
elastic yam (stretch).

Some examples of ordinary non-stretch fabrics are:
Light fabrics: Silk, lawn (cambric) cotton and fine

crepe (1).

Medium fabrics: Cotton (2) and linen.
Heavy fabrics: Denim (3) and coat fabrics.

Felt and non-woven interfacinp are rigid in all direc

tions. Sew them in the same way as non-stretch fabrics.

Terry cloth can be woven (4) or knitted (5). Set the

machine for non-stretch terry cloth if woven. Sew knit
ted terry cloth (stretch terry, stretch velour) in the same

way as for stretch fabrics.
