Sewing guidance

Hemming (cont.)

Before starting to hem, test sew a few stitches on a

scrap of the fabric and compare the results with the
illustrations. The picture to the left shows how the
stitches fail to reach the fold line of the fabric. A check
should be made that the fold line of the fabric rides in the
groove and, if necessary, increase the stitch width
slightly by pressing the + button under the right digital
indicator.

The center picture illustrates how the stitch width has

been increased too much, leading to an excessive “bite”,
resulting in the stitches being visible from the right side.
If this is the case, reduce the stitch width slightly.

The right picture shows a correctly sewn blindstitched

hem. The needle catches one thread only of the folded

edge.

If you wish to sew a hem at the edge of a sleeve, ruffle,

etc. in light stretch fabrics, use the overcast stitch.

Fold a narrow, double hem and sew with tight upper

thread tension (scallop stitch).

If you wish to have the scalloped edge on non-stretch

fabrics, it will be necessary to sew on the bias using the
overcast stitch, which you can set by first selecting

“light” material and then overcast stitch by pressing the

stitch selector.
