Sewing guidance

If you want to sew seams with the seam allowance

pressed open, the following generally applies:

Non-stretch fabrics, leather and vinyl are sewn with

straight stitching. When sewing light and other stretch
fabrics, choose the reinforced straight stitch.

When you have joined the fabric pieces, press the

seam allowances open. To obtain an even seam allo
wance, use one of the marking on the stitch plate or the

edge guide.

It is usually best to simultaneously join and overcast

stretch fabrics. This is described on page 24.

Overcasting

It is necessary to overcast the seam allowance on some

fabrics to prevent fraying. It is easier to overcast the
edges of each fabric piece separately before sewing the
garment together.

Three-step zig-zag (2) is the most commonly used

overcasting stitch and the machine automatically selects
the stitch width and length according to the characteris
tics of the fabric.

It is not normally necessary to overcast leather or

vinyl but if so, use ordinary zig-zag (1).

Trim the edges before overcasting. Be sure the needle

covers the edge of the fabric entirely. With the basic
setting, allow the fabric edge to run along the right inside
edge of the presser foot.

Presser foot J is fitted with a pin on the right-hand side

to prevent the fabric from puckering.
