Sun Fire X4100 and Sun Fire X4200 Servers System Management Guide • December 2005

In all cases, the CD drive and floppy drive appear to be plugged in to the host.

The host finds out about a medium change and medium insertion or removal by
sending SCSI commands, which are handled by the USB driver. The USB driver
returns "no medium" immediately if Remote Console software (specific device
redirection) is not connected.

If Remote Console software is connected, the host driver passes on the command
to the remote client, and the remote client will return that actual status based on
whether a medium is actually present or whether a medium has changed since
the host last asked about it.

For USB devices, there is no asynchronous way for a device to communicate
status changes to the host, so the host always queries. For both CDs and floppies,
a "test unit ready" command is periodically sent by the host.

Information in

TABLE 10-1

describes different case scenarios in which the Remote

Console software and CD drive and floppy drive redirection operate.
