Sun Fire X4100 and Sun Fire X4200 Servers System Management Guide • December 2005

The baud rate value must match the speed that was specified for the BIOS serial
redirection feature (default is 9600 baud) and the speed used for the boot loader and
operating system configuration.

3. Set the baud rate for the external serial port using the drop-down list box.

This setting must match the baud rate on the RJ-45 serial port on the Sun Fire X4100
or Sun Fire X4200 server.

4. Click Save for your changes to take effect, or click Cancel to return to the previous

settings.

How to Set the SP Clock

This section explains how to set the ILOM Service Processor (SP) clock manually or
to synchronize the SP date and time with a Network Time Protocol (NTP) server.

NTP is an Internet standard for TCP/IP networks. It synchronizes the clock times of
networked devices with NTP servers to millisecond accuracy relative to Coordinated
Universal Time (UTC). The service processor does not have a battery-operated real-
time clock (RTC). When the Sun Fire X4100 or Sun Fire X4200 server is first plugged
in, the SP’s time starts at Thu Jan 1 00:00:00 UTC 1970. The SP time is set
unconditionally by the system BIOS upon BIOS POST. If the BIOS time is incorrect,
the SP time will also be incorrect, at least briefly. If the SP is configured to use NTP
and the NTP server is accessible, the SP will correct its time within a few minutes of
either the SP booting or the time setting of the BIOS POST. If NTP is not used, the
SP’s clock will be set as it was initialized by the BIOS. The SP time is not maintained
through warm boots. Therefore, if the SP reboots while the host does not, the SP
time will only be advanced from 1970 if NTP is configured and working.

Before You Begin

Log in to the service processor (SP) as Administrator to reach the ILOM web GUI.
Only accounts with Administrator privileges are enabled to set the service processor
clock.

Obtain the IP addresses of the NTP servers you want to use.
