characters printed per unit of time.

problem determination. The
process of identifying the source of a
problem; for example, a program
component, a machine failure,
telecommunication facilities, user or
contractor-installed programs or
equipment, an environment failure
such as a power loss, or a user
error.

ready. A state where you press
Start and there are no error
conditions. The printer can be ready
and online or offline. See also offline
and online. Contrast with not ready.

remote. Concerning the peripheral
parts of a network not centrally
linked to the host processor and
generally using telecommunication
lines with public right-of-way.
Synonymous with link-attached.

ribbon advance knob. Blue knob
used to move the ribbon within the
cartridge and around the print head
to take up slack and improve print
quality.

ribbon cartridge. The housing
holding the ribbon and containing
the ribbon advance knob.

ribbon guide. A device that
positions the ribbon as it moves from
a full spool to an empty one.

right roller assembly. Used to
guide the right side of cut forms
through the F3 forms device. Also
known as feed roller.

serial interface. An interface
where data is exchanged between
the computer and the printer one bit
at a time.

slotted opening. A space on the
bottom of the ribbon cartridge used
to align the cartridge with the metal
post on the printer frame.

SPA. Serial or parallel attachment.

T

tear bar. A bar that has an edge
used to separate continuous forms
after they have printed.

tear off position. The location on
continuous forms where they can be
separated using the tear bar on the
F2 forms device.

top of form. A horizontal print line,
near the top of the paper, above
which the printer will not print.

tractor. The mechanism that
controls movement of continuous
forms paper by using the paper
holes in the margins.

tractor doors. Blue doors used to
hold continuous forms against the
tractor pins.
