SNA – Systems Network Architecture

IBM’s proprietary high level networking protocol standard.
Subnet Mask

A bit mask used to identify which bits in an IP address correspond to the

network address and subnet portions of the address. This mask is referred

to as the subnet mask because the network portion of the address can be

determined by the class inherent in an IP address. The address mask has ones

(1) in positions corresponding to the network and subnet numbers and zeros

(0) in the host number positions.
SVGA - Super Video Graphics Array

A video display standard; the resolution is 800 x 600 4-bit pixels. Each

pixel can therefore be one of 16 colors.

TCP/IP – Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol

A set of protocols developed for the internet to get data from one network
device to another.

IPThe network layer for the TCP/IP protocol is a connectionless, best-effort

packet switching protocol. It provides packet routing, fragmentation, and re-
assembly through the data link layer.

URL - Uniform Resource Locator (world-wide web address)

An address identifying the location of a file on the Internet, consisting of the

protocol, the computer on which the file is located, and the file’s location on
that computer.

WINS – Windows Internet Naming Service

Software which resolves NetBIOS names to IP addresses.

WOSA – Windows Open System Architecture

An earlier umbrella term for a variety of programming interfaces from

Microsoft designed to provide application interoperability across the Windows

environment. WOSA provides a common denominator for front-end Windows

applications to access back-end services. For example, any WOSA-compliant

query program from one vendor can gain access to any WOSA-compliant
DBMS from any other vendor.

XML – Extensible Markup Language

A metalanguage written in SGML that allows one to design a markup language,

used to allow for the easy interchange of documents on the World Wide Web.
