Canadian Energy Effi ciency

The Energy Effi ciency Act and the Energy Effi cien-
cy Regulations establish minimum energy perfor-
mance levels for electric motors from 1 to 200 HP
(0.75 to 150 kW) for sale or lease in Canada. The
Energy Effi ciency Regulations were developed by
Natural Resources Canada (NRCan).

Certain National Electrical Manufacturers Asso-
ciation (NEMA) motors have been regulated since
Feb. 3,1995. Effective Nov. 27, 1997, the Energy Ef-
fi ciencyRegulations were amended to include In-
ternational Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) mo-
tors. This amendment also increased the minimum
energy performance levels that motors must meet.
For explosion-proof motors and motors contained
within an integral gear assembly, the effective date
of the Regulations is Nov. 27, 1999.

The regulations mandate that motors carry an ener-
gy effi ciency verifi cation mark that is authorized by
Standards Council of Canada (SCC) accredited cer-
tifi cation organization such as Canadian Standards
Association (CSA).

CEMEP Agreement
European Effi ciency Categories

CEMEP, the association of European Electric Motor
Manufacturers, has reached an agreement with the
European Commission’s General Directorate for En-
ergy that in the future all 2 and 4-pole low voltage
motors from 1 to 100kW will be categorized on the
basis of their effi ciency. The classifi cation will be
displayed on the nameplate and in catalogs. The
following categories will be used: EFF1, EFF2 and
EFF3.

Indicates a high effi ciency factor.

NORD supplies both motors of EFF1 and EFF2 cat-
egories in its 4-pole motors. The category EFF2 mo-
tors are the standard effi ciency motors and the EFF1
motors are the “H” line of energy effi cient motors.

In the future NORD will mark all of its 50-Hz motor
with the CEMEP effi ciency symbols.

Inverter/Vector Duty

NORD single–speed motors are Inverter/Vector
Duty. The construction of the NORD motors insu-
lating system takes into account the non-sinusoidal
wave forms produced by variable frequency drives.
NORD uses high grade insulating components and
extra fi rst turn protection as well as double coated
wire to ensure long service life when connected to
inverters. NORD motors can produce full torque
at zero speed if properly sized, selected and con-
trolled.
