1.

Connect to the MCU or RCU* of the pair(s) to be released, open the XP Continuous Access
main window, and click the Pair Operation tab.

If you plan to use the C/T Delete Range option, you must connect to the RCU.

2.

In the tree, select a port, host group, desired CU, or upper CU grouping. Use the Display Filter
as needed to display the desired pairs (for example, select Async only) (see

“Display Filter”

(page 69)

).

3.

In the list, select the pair(s) that you want to release.

Select either XP Continuous Access Synchronous or XP Continuous Access Asynchronous pairs
(not both). If you plan to use the C/T or Group delete range option, select only one XP
Continuous Access Asynchronous pair in the group.

4.

Right-click, and click Pairsplit-S to open the Pairsplit-S dialog box (see

“Pairsplit-S Dialog Box

for Synchronous and Asynchronous Pairs” (page 142)

).

5.

On the Pairsplit-S dialog box, select the desired pair release options, and click Set to close
the Pairsplit-S dialog box. The preview list displays the requested pairsplit-S operation(s).

6.

Verify the requested operation(s) in the preview list. Make sure that the pair release options
for each pair are correct.

To change one or more operations, select the operation(s) from the preview list, right-click,
and click Modify. To remove one or more operations, select the operation(s) from the preview
list, right-click, and click Delete. To cancel all operations, select all the operations in the preview
list, right-click, and click the Delete command, or click the Cancel button.

7.

To start the operation(s), click the Apply button.

If one or more operation(s) did not start normally, the preview list displays only the operation(s)
that did not start normally. An error code is displayed in the Error Code column in the preview
list. To display an error message, select one LU, right-click, and click Error Detail. After you
see the error message, click OK button to close the error message.

8.

On the Pair Operation window, verify that the pairsplit-S operations are completed successfully
(SMPL or Deleting and then SMPL status, not PSUE). To monitor the progress of the pairsplit-S
operation(s), click Refresh to update the information in the list, or use the Detailed Information
dialog box (see

“Viewing XP Continuous Access Pair Status” (page 131)

) to monitor the detailed

status of each pair.

To restart a pair that was released from the RCU, first release the pair from the MCU, and then
restart the pair using the appropriate initial copy option (Entire Volume or None).

Powering Off/On XP Continuous Access Components

The user is responsible for controlling power-off activities for storage systems involved in XP
Continuous Access operations. If you need to power off the storage system, call your HP Technical
Support representative for assistance. The following sections provide instructions for performing
planned outages of XP Continuous Access components.

If power is removed from an MCU while XP Continuous Access operations are in progress, the XP
Continuous Access pairs are not affected, but the update sequence consistency of the XP Continuous
Access Asynchronous groups at the RCU may be affected (see

“Planned Outage of the MCU”

(page 145)

for further information). When power is restored to an MCU, the MCU communicates

with its RCU(s) to confirm the pair status of the S-VOLs. Make sure that XP Continuous Access
communications are fully restored (all paths have normal status) before beginning I/O operations
to the P-VOLs. If the MCU accepts a write I/O operation for a P-VOL before this confirmation is
complete, the MCU will suspend the pair and change the status of the P-VOL to suspended-by RCU.
The MCU will not be able to change the pair status of the S-VOL.

If power is removed from an RCU or remote copy connection while XP Continuous Access operations
are in progress, the MCU(s) will detect the communications failure, suspend all affected pairs, and
