1. Introducing ExaSAN Compact
1.1 System Overview
Your new ExaSAN (pronounced “X-sa-SAN”) Compact system is a complete SAN (Storage Area
Network) solution for the small-to-medium-sized Apple workgroups. Its breakthrough design in
workgroup storage implementation boosts collaborative productivity with shared data access and
exceptional performance, all without the complexity or cost of conventional FC (Fibre Channel) SANs.
1.1.1 What is the ExaSAN Solution
Developed by Accusys, Inc., a worldwide leader in RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks)
storage systems, ExaSAN is a system solution built for simple, cost-effective deployment and storage
management. Using PCIe (PCI Express) technology, ExaSAN puts the benefits of shared, scalable, and
high-performance storage within easy reach of organizations with limited IT resources and budgets.
Whether it’s collaborative video editing in a post-production workgroup, or a shared research project in a
university, the ExaSAN solution offers a range of performance levels and storage capacities that scale to
meet the needs of small-to-medium-sized organizations. Equally important is its integrated design,
centralized administration and monitoring,, and a suite of built-in management tools; which eliminate the
need for a staff of experts to install and maintain a SAN for the workgroups.
Figure 1 below depicts a standard ExaSAN system solution architecture.
1.1.2 What is the ExaSAN Compact Solution
The ExaSAN Compact is a customized implementation of the ExaSAN solution. It is specifically
designed to support two workgroup sizes: up-to-4 and up-to-8. The model of the PCIe switch component
of the system determines the maximum size of a particular supported workgroup. See Section 1.1.3.3 for
additional information about the SW04/08 switch.
Your ExaSAN Compact system consists of the standard components listed below in this section. Note
that while items 1 through 8 are Accusys-supplied equipment, they are not necessarily part of the
ExaSAN switch package. Refer to Section 1.3.2 for a complete list of accessories that are included in your
