7. Migrating from PCIe DAS to ExaSAN

With the outstanding price-performance mark, Accusys’ PCIe RAID is well accepted in the DAS (Direct
Attached Storage) market for Video Editing. A DAS user can easily advance from the single-user
environment to the collaboration workgroup with ExaSAN-enabled Xsan.

This chapter explains the conceptual procedures of such migration. Please refer to Chapter 6, “Xsan
Overview,” for the proper steps to carry out the migration. Contact Accusys Technical Support or your
local Accusys distributor for assistance if necessary.

Note that although this chapter describes specifically how to migrate from the Accusys’ PCIe RAID
based DAS solution to ExaSAN workgroup; the same procedures apply to migration from other DAS
technologies (e.g. SAS RAID) to ExaSAN as well.

7.1 DAS Configuration

In a typical PCIe DAS configuration, a Mac Pro video workstation directly accesses the external PCIe
RAID through a dedicated PCIe HBA as shown below. This configuration works well as long as all the
tasks can be sufficiently and effectively performed on this single workstation.

7.2 Expanding to Xsan

When shared, multi-workstation concurrent access and collaboration is required, follow the procedures
described in Section 6.6, “Setting Up an ExaSAN-enabled Xsan,” to build your Xsan MDC and Volume
on the workstation attached to DAS as shown below.
