8. LUN Masking

corruption. In other words, if you allow LUN0 on Storage Port 1 to be seen by Client Port 1, you
should mask that same partition out from all other Client Ports, unless you have installed and
configured Xsan management software. Un-managed sharing of the same partition among clients can
cause data corruption.

5. Click the “Apply” button at the lower-right to continue. You may take turn configuring all Client

Ports and apply your settings together with just one click to “Apply.”

6. When you are done, select other features from the switch GUI menu, or simply “Logout.”

8.4 LUN Masking Applications: Virtual Private Storage

LUN Masking can be used to create virtual private LUNs for connected video clients, so multiple clients
can safely share the same physical storage pool. Unlike Xsan, LUN Masking cannot share files
concurrently among the connected clients. However, you may un-present (un-map) and re-present (re-
map) a LUN from one client to another manually, which does carry the contents in the LUN over, as if
carrying a portable storage device from one system to another, but without the physical cabling changes.

There are two applications of LUN Masking: Basic and Advanced.
1. Basic LUN Masking sharing: This is sharing of the storage capacity only. Simply divide the storage

system into slices and map them to multiple clients permanently.

2. Advanced LUN Masking sharing: This is sharing of the data indirectly. By mapping a particular slice

to one client and then re-mapping it to a different client, data sharing can be accomplished indirectly.
It is like allowing multiple clients access to the same slice by taking turns. For example, client A is
given access to a video clip residing on a slice for editing; client B is subsequently given the same
access for playout. To re-map a particular partition (LUN) from one Client Port to another, simply
follow the steps described in Section 8.3, “Managing LUN Masking,” to adjust the masks
accordingly. No other action is required.
