8. ExaSAN LUN Masking Overview

This chapter explains what ExaSAN LUN Masking is, and how to configure LUN Masking to allow
sharing of storage system without installing Xsan management software.

Note that although through proper configuration, LUN Masking supports the sharing of different
partitions (also referred to as “slice”) on the same storage system by multiple clients; it does not support
concurrent access of the same partition and the data that is stored within, by multiple clients. The
operation of the latter requires SAN management software to be installed to prevent data corruption in
such a scenario.

8.1 What is LUN Masking

LUN Masking is an authorization process that makes a LUN available to some workgroup clients and
unavailable to other clients. Through the LUN Masking feature provided by the ExaSAN switch, called
ExaSAN LUN Masking, user can present (map) the LUNs to attached video clients selectively and
exclusively as illustrated below.

As you can see in this diagram, the physical storage on the left is logically divided into three color-coded
LUNs. Through the ExaSAN switch in the middle, each LUN is mapped to a single client and used
exclusively by it, as the color-coding indicates. Through this arrangement, the sharing of the storage
capacity by the multiple clients is made possible without Xsan management software.

8.2 Accessing LUN Masking

Follow the steps below to access LUN Masking.
1. Launch the switch GUI and log in as your system administrator, see Section 4.2.1 “Accessing the

Switch GUI,” for additional information.

2. Once you are logged in, you are in the default “Config Mode.”

3. Select “Application” from the menu in the left pane.

4. Select “Client Port Setting” from the sub-menu in the left pane.

5. Proceed to the next section.

8.3 Managing LUN MASKING

The screenshot below shows three storage systems represented by “Storage Port 1” to “Storage Port 3.”
Each storage system in turn has a varying number of partitions represented by “LUN No.”
