To Configure Your System for Automatic Modem Initialization and
Dialing:
1.

Program the HIB phone number and modem dialing command into the
proper MCN Screen File. Refer to section 6.5.9. Or you can specify the
HIB’s dialing string with the /D:DialingString command line option.

2.

From DOS, copy the proper initialization file (ex: UDSV3229.INI) to
MODEM.INI. If an initialization file for your modem is not included on the
disk, copy the closest one to MODEM.INI and use a text editor to enter the
proper initialization settings in the MODEM.INI files, as described in the
next section.

3.

Start the MCNRCD program.

4.

Load any screen file that uses the HIB you wish to dial.

10.1.1 Modem Initialization Requirements

When modems are used with the HIB and MCNRCD in a comparator display
system, certain modem features must be set. Below is a list of features that you
must set in both the remote modem (connected to the HIB module) and the local
modem (connected to the PC running MCNRCD).

Turn off local character echo. Most modems use the ‘E0’ command.

Turn on verbose responses. Most modems use the ‘V1’ command.

Set the modem to auto answer mode (only required for the remote

modem connected to the HIB). Most modems use the ‘S0=1’
command.

Set the modem for normal DTR operation. When DTR is toggled, the

modem terminates a call and goes into command mode. Most modems
use the ‘&D2’ command.

Set the modem for normal CD operation. The modem activates the

CD (carrier detect) signal when connecting with another modem and
deactivates CD when disconnecting. Most modems use the ‘&C1’
command.

Turn on hardware flow control (RTS/CTS). Refer to your modem

manual for this command.

Set the modem for constant speed DTE operation (the modem’s DTE

speed will remain fixed, no matter what the line connection speed is).
This is also referred to as Automatic Speed Buffering (ASB). Refer to
your modem manual for this command.

Turn on data compression.

Section 10.2 describes how the local and remote modems are programmed with
initialization strings.

10.1.2 The MODEM.INI file

The MCN Remote Comparator Display (MCNRCD) is designed to be universal
so that it can use many types of Hayes compatible modems. Because there are
