5.1.7 Check Clogging of Air Filter Element

When an element is clogged or damaged, dust or foreign material will contaminate the

engine. This will cause accelerated wear in each sliding part of the engine. Daily checking

or cleaning is required to ensure engine long life.

For servicing the air filter element, see 6.7.2.

5.1.8 Check V-belt Tension

If V-belt tension is too tight, water pump or alternator bearings may be damaged and

possibly shaft broken. If too loose, the belt may slip and cause premature belt damage.

When replacing belts, change all as a set.

V-belt adjustment procedure:

Loosen mounting bolts of the alternator to adjust the
alternator.

Visually check the belt for cracks, wear, or other
defects.

Adjust the belts so that the deflection will be 0.3 to
0.5in. when pressing with a finger.

Do not contaminate the belt with grease or LLC
(Antifreeze). Be sure it is completely clean.

5.1.9 Check Wiring of Each Part

Check wiring for loose connections, insulator damage, corrosion or short−circuit.

Be sure to properly clean air filter element
