Using Your DW Sonde with a 6500 Process Monitor

Set Up the Wiring for 4-20 mA Current or Modbus Output to Your SCADA System. As described in
Section 2.5.3 of the 6500 manual, the 6500 has the ability to output up to eight current output signals, each
corresponding to a water quality parameter. These connections for these outputs are made on TB-3 which
can be found at the bottom of the 6500 once the cover has been removed.


Supply Power to your 6500.
After removing the front cover, you will need to have a qualified electrician
supply 110-230 volt AC power to your 6500 through TB-1 according to the instructions found in Section
2.5.2 of the 6500 manual. Note that it is best to have a switch which is external from the 6500 in the
power circuit so that power can be shut off to the 6500 when removing the front panel. This switch is
NOT supplied with the 6500 and should be purchased by your electrician. CAUTION: The sensitivity
and stability of the monitor will be impaired if the input wiring is not grounded. Do NOT apply
power to the 6500 until all electrical connections are verified and secure.


Configure the Current Loop Outputs. As described in Section 3.3.4, you will be required to select which
parameters you want to output to your SCADA via the 4-20 mA function and to enter the parameter values
which correspond to the 4 mA and 20 mA values for each parameter. To activate the menu section of the
6500 software, press the Esc and Enter keys simultaneously to display the Main menu as shown below.






Then highlight the 4-20 mA entry, press Enter, and follow the instructions in Section 3.3.4 of the 6500
manual until all 4-20 mA outputs have been activated and properly configured. Press Esc to return to the
Main menu.


Set Up Your Sonde Configuration and Calibrate Your Sensors. Prior to attaching your DW sonde to
the 6500 Monitor, you will need to activate the proper sensors and report parameters, and calibrate all of
the sensors EXCEPT free chlorine. The free chlorine sensor will be calibrated at a later time after
installation in the flow cell at the site.

CAUTION: Be certain that the free chlorine sensor is NOT present in the sonde bulkhead
while calibrating the other sensors (pH, ORP, Conductivity, Turbidity, etc.). Some of the
calibration reagents may temporarily bias or damage the free chlorine electrodes which will
then require reconditioning.


The setup and calibration processes can be accomplished by two different methods as described below:

• Interface of the 6-Series Sonde with the 6500 Monitor via the matching MS-8 connectors on the

sonde cable and the 6500 enclosure. To carry out this procedure, the 6500 Environmental Process
Monitor must be installed in its permanent location with AC line power properly installed as
described by local electrical codes. See Sections 3 and 4 of the 6500 manual for detailed
instructions.

• Interface of the 6-Series Sonde with a laboratory computer or 650 display/logger. If a computer is

selected for setup, you must employ a YSI 6095B DB-9 to MS-8 adapter and you will have to
power the sonde either through internal batteries or a YSI 6038 or 6651 power supply. After using
this method to calibrate the sonde, proceed to section 3.3, 6500 Monitor Setup, in this manual.
