edge of hem. The number of threads
drawn will depend on the texture of

the fabric and the depth of the open

the right side of labric.)

4. Place work, right side up, under

presser foot with the hem toward the

left.

6. Lewder the presser foot and stitch,

guiding the hem edge under the

needle so that the straight stitches are

made in the drawn-thread channel

(or through the single thickness of

fabric) and the sideward stitches (or

points) in the hem.

Turning a corner

Hems in household linens are usually
mitred at the corners, but they may also

be turned with a double overlap and

stitched from edge to edge. If corners

are mitred, vv^ork should bo pivoted on
the needle at the inside point of the mitre.

To pivot, leave the needle in the fabric at

the corner, making sure your last stitch is

a straight stitch before a

(or

sidew'ard) stitch.
