7.0 SYSTEM INSTALLATION: TIRE SENSORS

7.1 SENSOR OVERVIEW

SmarTire

TPMS offers two types of tire sensors; a standard tire sensor (orange) that has a

battery saving “stationary mode”, and an “always on” tire sensor (yellow) that does not. The
standard sensor’s stationary mode is initiated when the vehicle is stopped or consistently
traveling less than 14 mph (22 km/h) for 15 minutes. In stationary mode, the standard tire sensor
measures and transmits tire pressure and temperature every 15 minutes. When the vehicle
moves 14 mph (22 km/h), a centrifugal switch activates the standard sensor causing it to sense
tire pressure and temperature every 12 seconds and transmit tire data every 3 – 5 minutes. If a
pressure change of 3 PSI or a major temperature change is detected, the sensor breaks its
regular schedule and transmits tire data immediately. Estimated battery life for the standard tire
sensor is 5 - 7 years or 1 million miles.

The “always on” tire sensor does not have a sleep mode. It senses tire pressure and temperature
every 12 seconds and transmits tire data every 3 – 5 minutes. When equipped with the always on
tire sensor, SmarTire

TPMS will provide tire data without having to move the vehicle. This tire

sensor also accommodates vehicles that seldom travel 14 mph (22 km/h). Without the battery
saving sleep mode, always on tire sensors have an estimated battery life of 5 years.

7.1.1 Break Away Cradle

If proper care is not taken when removing or installing a tire on a rim that has a tire sensor
installed, damage can occur. Each SmarTire

tire sensor is conveniently mounted in a break-

away cradle so that if damage accidentally occurs, the inexpensive cradle is broken instead of the
sensor.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: PLEASE READ

Please read this section carefully and follow each step precisely to ensure
that you do not damage a sensor and the sensors are installed in the
correct, pre-programmed locations.

SmarTire

tire sensors can be broken when mounting and dismounting a

tire unless specific instructions are followed. If tire work is done by an
unauthorized facility, please let them know that a tire pressure monitoring
system is installed on the vehicle before they remove a tire from a wheel.

Exercise caution when cutting strap (Section 6.2 step 2.). May result
in sharp edges!
