APPENDIX E - UPC SPECIFICATIONS
The Universal Product Code (UPC) symbols can be found on almost all retail
products today. The UPC coding system was designed to uniquely identify a
product and its manufacturer.
UPC VERSION A
UPC-A is a fixed length (12 digits) numeric only code with the following features:
UPC-A BAR CODE
The NUMBER SYSTEM CHARACTER indicates the type of product the symbol is
identifying:
0,7 Regular UPC codes with numbers assigned by the Uniform Code
Council (see appendix on bar code sources).
2 Random-weight items such as meat and produce.
3 National Drug Code and National Health Related Items Code.
4 For in-store marking of non-food items.
5 Reserved for coupons.
1,6,8,9 Reserved for future use.
