Before handling any CRU, obtain an electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection kit.
Follow the directions on the kit for replacing a CRU to prevent damage to system
components.

Power cords might contain faulty connectors that, when touched, vibrated, or flexed, can
cause intermittent power or the loss of a processor.

Before replacing a power supply, visually check the power cord without touching the
power cord. If the power cord molding is elliptical rather than square, or if the power
cord part number is TPN 064583, you must replace the power cord offline with power
cord TPN 421575 before you can replace the power supply. For power cord replacement
instructions, refer to Replacing an S7x000 Power Cord on the

CSSI Web

. If you are

replacing both the power cord and the power supply, install the replacement power cord
before installing the replacement power supply.

Handle with care -- the power supply weighs approximately 5.6 kilograms (14 pounds).

Follow these standard operating practices when replacing CRUs:

Replace only one CRU at a time. Attempting to replace more than one hardware
component at a time might cause serious system outages, processor halts, and
connectivity problems.

Remove all jewelry and metal accessories, such as rings, watches, and necklaces,
before working with the equipment. These items can damage electrical equipment
or result in personal injury.

Restrain any dangling items that can get caught in electromechanical equipment,
such as long hair and sleeves, before working with the equipment.

Unpack and inspect the replacement power supply. Use a flashlight to examine the pins on the
power supply's backplane connector for any damage. If any pins are bent or broken, you must
order another power supply (or have the backplane connector repaired or replaced) before
continuing with this procedure. Refer to Avoiding Connector and Backplane Damage During
CRU/FRU Replacement on the

CSSI Web

.

Removing the Power Supply

Remove the front panel from the power shelf.

1.

Locate the power supply you are removing (power supplies are in slots 31 and 32). At this
point, the LED above the power supply you are removing might or might not be lit. This
illustration shows an S7x000 processor enclosure. For an illustration of an IOMF2 CRU, see
the NonStop S-Series Hardware Installation and FastPath Guide.
