SEWING KNIT AND STRETCH FABRIC (Continued)
LINGERIE SEAMS
To make seams in lingerie durable and
flexible, use a combination of straight
and zig-zag stitching. Make a test sample
to help you decide which of the following
methods is most appropriate for your
fabric and garment. Method # 1 is
particularly suitable for |-inch bias seams
in woven fabric and Method #2 is best
for seams in nylon tricot.
For a 5/8-inch Seam
Method # 1
For a f-inch seam:
•
Straight-stitch the seam (with stitch
width at i ) on wrong side of fabric.
• Press both seam allowances in the same
direction.
•
From the right side, topstitch with
narrow zig-zag stitching, letting needle
alternately enter seamline and seam
thickness.
For a Narrow Seam
Method# 2
For a narrow seam:
•
Cut the fabric for a |-inch seam
allowance.
• Straight-stitch seamline on wrong side
of fabric, using a regular or stretch
stitch.
•
Place a line of medium-width, open
zig-zag stitching close to the straight
stitching.
(Stitch
width
medium
to
medium-wide; stitch length 20.)
•
Trim away excess fabric close to
stitching to produce a narrow seam
edge.
