The memory area containing the customer-specific datum shift
can be write-protected (see EnDat Specifications). Any attempt
to change the customized datum shift of such an encoder
results in an error message.

A correct datum shift is possible only when the encoder is
motionless. The encoder must therefore not be moved
during the datum shift.

Setting write protection for memory areas

In EnDat encoders, you can protect the memory areas with
your information by specifying write-protection. This is
necessary particularly to ensure machine safety and system
reliability. The manufacturer of the encoder therefore protects
the “parameters of the encoder manufacturer” memory area
with the corresponding write-protection bit.

We recommend also setting the appropriate write-protection bit
after setting the machine-relevant parameters in the OEM
memory areas and after shifting the datum!

Once you have set a write-protection bit, it can be reset
only by a HEIDENHAIN service agency.
