1. Discharged batteries.

2. Bad connections, wires,

cables or other parts in the
starting circuit.

3. Using the wrong engine oil

for cold weather operation.

4. Worn teeth on the starter

drive pinion or the flywheel
ring gear.

5. Hex nuts that fasten the

starter to the flywheel
housing are loose.

Starting System—STARTER

Starter doesn't run
or doesn't run
correctly.

Remove the starter to check
the teeth. Repair as
necessary.

Tighten the hex nuts.

Starting System—STARTING MOTOR RELAY

No voltage at
starter solenoid
when ignition key
switch is in the
START position.

Starter relay (36, Fig 10.7) is
not energized due to broken
wiring or a defective circuit
breaker (10).

Replace wiring or circuit
breaker.

Starter operates
continuously
without ignition
key in the START
position.

Starter relay (36, Fig 10.7) is
“frozen” in the closed position.

Temporarily disconnect wiring
to starter relay and replace
starter relay.
