Mute notes in the Piano Roll Editor
You can mute individual notes in the Piano Roll Editor, letting you experiment with different note
choices in a melody, or different chord voicings, for example.
Mute or unmute notes
Do one of the following:
m Click one or more notes with the Mute tool.
m Select the notes, then click one of the selected notes with the Mute tool.
Muted notes are shown without color.
The Select Muted Regions/Events key command is also available in the Piano Roll Editor. You can
use it to select all muted notes in a MIDI region.
Mute or unmute all notes of a particular pitch
m Click a piano key in the keyboard at the left of the Piano Roll Editor with the Mute tool.
This action mutes or unmutes all notes of the clicked pitch in the MIDI region, and is useful
for muting the hi-hats in a MIDI region that is triggering an entire drum kit, for example. For

Change the color of notes in the Piano Roll Editor
You can change the color of notes in the Piano Roll Editor to display note velocity, region colors,
or MIDI channel colors. By default, notes correspond to the region color.
Change the color of notes
Do one of the following:
m Choose View > Set Note Color in the Piano Roll Editor menu bar, then choose an option from
the submenu.

Velocity Colors: Colors notes to show their MIDI note velocity.
•
Region Colors: Colors notes to correspond with the MIDI region.
•
MIDI Channel Colors: Colors notes to correspond with the MIDI channel.
m Control-click the Piano Roll Editor background, then choose a color assignment from the
shortcut menu.
