5.12 Managing the hp toptools remote control card

The HP Toptools Remote Control card is an HP Netserver accessory product that enables inband and out-of-band
management for HP Netservers – even when the server is ‘hung’ or powered off. Using the card, Netserver
customers can remotely power on and off the Netserver, view errors, or initiate a remote control session via
pcAnywhere.

When using inband management, the card is installed into the HP Netserver and configured with its own network
identity (IP address and hostname). Once on the network, HP Toptools for OpenView NNM can discover and
identify the card and in which server it resides. As a result, HP Toptools Remote Control cards are discovered as
network nodes on the NNM map with actions enabled that specifically manage the card (as shown in Table 4).

HP Toptools Remote Control cards use webagent technology (a webserver on the card) to provide remote
management of the card and its features via a web browser. When selecting the Properties menu item, the card’s
web pages will be raised. If the card has been configured with a password, the pages will prompt for login
information.

The User Maintenance menu items Add, Delete, Change Password, and View Reports launch actions that maintain
user accounts for Remote Control card access (not the Netserver), and may be invoked against a single device or
selection list of cards selected from within the NNM console. Update Software allows the user to remotely update
the card’s firmware.

The Replicate Configuration action allows you to transfer the configuration settings used on one HP Toptools
Remote Control card to others. This can save a great deal of time in configuring large numbers of HP Netservers.

In addition to managing the card’s configuration, the action items Power On and Power Off are added to the menu
items for the Netserver in which the card resides (as described in the Managing HP Netservers section).
