table application database use Remote Data Access to communicate with
each other. RDA includes several components, which must be configured
BEFORE you install the batch portable application on the handheld device.
RDA includes the workstation application, Internet Information Services
(IIS), Microsoft ActiveSync, Windows Directory Authentication,
Microsoft SQL Server, and Microsoft SQL Server CE.

Important:The sections that follow deal with advanced network settings.
Consult your system administrator to determine the best Remote Data
Access (RDA) setup option for your system.

After you install the workstation application but before you install the
batch portable application on the batch portable device, you must deter-
mine and configure the Remote Data Access configuration option for your
system so that the workstation application and the batch portable applica-
tion are able to synchronize data. IntelliTrack applications support four
basic RDA configurations.

The required components for Remote Data Access (RDA) can be installed
on your system in various configurations: installing all components on a
single computer, distributing the components between two computers, or
distributing the components on three or more computers. Depending on the
configuration option that you use, IIS, ActiveSync or Windows Mobile
Device Center Software, and SQL Express or SQL Server will operate on
your local PC or on a remote PC (server). When setting up Remote Data
Access, you will come across various terms. These terms, as they relate to
Remote Data Access (RDA) with your IntelliTrack system, are defined
below.

Workgroup: a computer grouping intended to help users find printers
and shared folders within a group. In Windows, workgroups do not
offer centralized user accounts or authentication.

1

Domain: a computer grouping within a network that has a unique
name; the computers share a common directory database. All comput-
ers in the domain are administered as part of a unit with common rules
and procedures.
