The PowerVault 735N NAS appliance is designed for operation in a headless environment—meaning that
during normal operation the system does not require a keyboard, monitor, and mouse. In some situations
when you will need to troubleshoot the system, you must install these components onto your system to read
system error messages and check additional functions and settings on your system. Be sure to have these
components ready, as some of the procedures in the following sections will require you to read and enter
system information.

When you first discover a problem with your system, define the problem and the conditions when the
problem occurred. Once you have this information, follow the procedures below. They will lead you through
the necessary checks and procedures that will help you solve basic system problems. These procedures will
also direct you to the appropriate section for detailed troubleshooting information to solve more complex
problems.

The following steps will lead you to the section that provides the troubleshooting procedures related to your
problem:

NOTES: If your system is operating erratically, back up the files on your hard-disk drives before
performing the following steps.

See the System Administrator's Guide or the documentation for your backup software for information
about backing up your data.

External Visual Inspection

Basic system problems may be caused by improperly set switches or controls, and loose or improperly
connected cables. A quick check of these components and connections can easily solve these problems.

The following subsections provide a visual inspection of the PowerVault 735N storage system and the
optional attached PowerVault 210S storage system.
