The straight edge of the material is turned up to the

width desired and, with a pro­

portionately

narrow

zig

zag

stitch

the

straight

edge

is

sewn to either the raw edge
or the cut edge which has
been

turned

to

the

bottom.

The needle must pierce the

material close to its turned
edge.

For

this

work

use

cording foot (No. 5, Fig. 3).

Fringing and Hem Stitching (Fig. 42)
When it is desired to make a fringed edge, remove

sufficient

threads

from

the

material to get the length of
fringe required and, in order

to

prevent

fraying,

stitch

along

the

unfrayed

portion

of the material, in the same
manner as for overedging.

In the same manner, by pull­
ing threads from the middle
of the goods, hem stitching
can

be

produced

by

using

the zig zag stitch as shown

in Fig. 42.
