For gimp buttonholes (Fig. 59) draw the gimp thread
through the opening in the buttonhole foot, which is
provided for this purpose, and under the needle.

The gimp thread is then automatically covered by the
thread.
The
buttonholes
with
flat
edges,
which
are
described above have the advantage of great durabi
lity. For the making of a button
hole with raised edges, as illustrat
ed in Fig. 60, the upper thread
tension
must
be
set
as
tight
as
possible — almost to the tearing
point—while
the
under
thread
tension should be set as loose as
possible. For this purpose the upper
thread
must
be
stronger
than
the
under
thread.
Otherwise,
proceed
as when sewing flat buttonholes.
