5. Apply a generous coating of Pac-Ease lubricant to the seal diaphragm
assembly. Without touching the seal faces, slide the diaphragm assembly
over the pump shaft, with the polished face toward the stationary seat.
6. Using a mechanical seal insertion tool,
in Figure 6b-2: “Typical Mechanical
Seal Insertion Tool.” push the dia-
phragm assembly in until the two run-
ning faces contact.
7. The seal insertion tool is available from
Hale - order p/n: 029-0760-00-0.
Note; If necessary, the seal insertion tool
can be made of plastic or brass to the dimen-
sions in Figure 6b-2: “Typical Mechanical
Seal Insertion Tool.”
8. Keep the seal well lubricated and verify
that the seal seats against the station-
ary seat. If binding occurs, apply addi-
tional Pac-Ease lubricant.
9. Place the spring on the diaphragm
assembly, making sure to locate the
spring on the diaphragm assembly’s
pilot.
Note: On pump models CBP and 2CBP, slide the retainer onto the pump shaft and
securer in place with the retaining ring. (See Figure 6b-1: “Typical Mechanical Seal
Assembly” on page 111.)
Impeller and Volute Installation Notes
Always refer to your specific Installation, Operation and Service Maintenance
Manual for detailed instructions on impeller and volute installation.
❑ When installing the impeller, make sure the mechanical seal spring sits in
the counterbore on the back of the impeller. Also see CAUTION ! on pape
112.
❑ For CBP and 2CBP series pumps - torque the impeller nut to 125 ft.-lbs. (169
N-m).
❑ For all other booster and refueler / defueler series pumps - torque the impel-
ler nut to 110 ft.-lbs. (149 N-m).
❑ Where applicable, continue tightening the impeller nut until the cotter pin can
be installed to lock the nut in place, then bend over the ends of the cotter pin.
