Appendix G: Connection to Mobile Network

The Spider is equipped with an internal GSM/GPRS modem.
However, the user must supply a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module)
card for each Spider to use wireless services. While AT&T and T-
Mobile are the main providers of GSM/GPRS services in the U.S.,
many other providers offer the same services. All of these other
providers are resellers of the services offered by AT&T and T-Mobile.

Obtain the following services from the wireless provider:

NOTE: Depending on the wireless alarming capabilities provided
with the Spider, the user will need to order the proper GSM services
to ensure full use of the unit

s communications capabilities.

Text Messaging: All Spider units support standard text
messaging (i.e., SMS), so the account must include this
service (at a minimum).

Voice Services: For applications involving voice alarms, the
account must include normal GSM voice services.

GPRS (Data) Services: These wireless data services are
required for all Spiders equipped for using email or FTP
posting to deliver alarms and reports. GPRS data services
fall into two categories based on the method of IP
addressing.

Dynamic Addressing

This is the most common type of

GPRS service offered by GSM wireless data providers.
When the Spider is powered up, the network assigns an
IP address to the SIM card. This address periodically is
changed at the provider

s discretion. It also is private

and, therefore, cannot be accessed over the Internet.
The Spider can only send messages or data out; it
cannot view any incoming connection requests. Dynamic
addressing is commonly used by hand-held products,
such as Blackberrys and IPhones. It will support all
Spider e-mail and FTP functions; however, it will not
support Web access.
