Chapter 9: Data Communication Link Examples

A FreeWave transceivers’ versatility allows data communication links to be established using a variety of
different configurations.

The example below shows the most common and straight forward link; a Gateway communicating to a
Endpoint in a Point-to-Point link.

The example below shows how a link might be set up using a Repeater. The Repeater may be located on a
hilltop or other elevated structure enhancing the link from the Gateway to the Endpoint. In this configuration, it
may be desirable to use an external Omni-directional antenna at the Repeater. Yagi antennas may be used at
both the Gateway and Endpoint transceivers. When a Repeater is used, the RF throughput is cut in half.

The example below shows a link with two Repeaters between the Gateway and Endpoint. With two
Repeaters there is clearly more flexibility in getting around obstacles and greater total range is possible.
Again, it maybe desirable to use external Omni-directional antennas with the Repeaters, and attaching a Yagi
to the Gateway and Endpoint to increase the range of the link. When two Repeaters are used there is no
further degradation in the RF throughput of the link.
