The Reader shows the battery level as an icon in the top right

hand corner of the display. As the battery level falls the icon will empty.
Batteries for the Reader are installed in a compartment located under the
plastic cover on the back panel of the instrument, as described in Section
2.4. Before removing the main batteries, make sure that the Reader is
switched OFF.

The memory and clock of the Reader are protected for up to 10

minutes when the main batteries are removed from the instrument.

When the batteries are removed, they must be replaced with

batteries of equivalent type and quality, i.e. alkaline type AA (LR6 / AM3 /
MN1500 / Mignon).

When the Reader is to be out of service for some time, first

download all the stored data to a PC as described in Section 4.9, then
remove the batteries.

PLEASE NOTE that before the Reader can be operated again, it

must be completely re-configured.

Routine Care

All Ni-CAD cells will self-discharge in this way. In addition, as individual cells are not
identical, when they are arranged as a battery they will not discharge at the same rate.
This means that the first cell to discharge will often be forced into a “reverse current”
situation by the other cells and become damaged. If the batteries are simply left
discharged, there is no way to prevent this situation, as the discharge will be within the
cell.

The actual time taken to fully self-discharge is rarely less than a month and is dependant
on storage temperature, the least damage occurring at about 10

o

C where 3 months

storage may be possible. At 50

o

C, the quoted period of 28 days is the safe maximum.

Ideally, the badge should not be stored for long at lower than +1

o

C.

The very tiny current of the “on watch” sensor causes an additional constant drain on the
badge battery as it waits for a signal from the Reader to start data acquisition.
