6 Folders and Shares

A folder on your DataSafe NAS can be shared with
others on the network, whether those computers are
running a Microsoft Windows operating system or a
UNIX operating system.
This DataSafe NAS supports the following methods of
sharing folders:

CIFS

— The Common Internet File System

protocol is used by clients running a Windows
operating system. (See “CIFS Overview” on page
163.)

n

NFS

— The Network File System protocol is used

by clients running UNIX. (See “Network Protocol
Overview: NFS” on page 63.)

n

FTP

— The File Transfer Protocol is an alternative

way of accessing a file share from any operating
system. (See “Network Protocol Overview: FTP” on
page 78.)

n

HTTP

— The Hyptertext Transfer Protocol is the

protocol for accessing a file share from Web
browsers. (See “Network Protocol Overview:
HTTP” on page 84.)

n

AFP

— The AFP Protocol is the protocol used by

clients running a Macintosh operating system.

n

NCP

— The NCP Protocol is the protocol is the

protocol used by clients running NetWare.

When you create a share on the DataSafe NAS, you
can enable any or all of the listed protocols.
