If you must reinstall HP SIM but want to preserve the information in your database, you must have a backup
of your database. After reinstalling HP SIM, you can restore your previous database backup into the database
created during the HP SIM installation.

Backing up an SQL server database

Microsoft SQL Enterprise Manager has built in utilities for backing up the database, including an automated
procedure. HP recommends viewing the help provided by the SQL Enterprise Manager to gain a complete
understanding of this procedure.

NOTE:

HP recommends stopping the HP SIM service to ensure that the discovery and data collection

processes do not occur during the save. However, the HP SIM service can be left running during the save
process if desired. A tool that preserves file permissions (such as the Windows Backup tool) must be used
while saving directories and files.

To backup the HP SIM database using Microsoft SQL Enterprise Manager:

1.

Using the file management tool of your choice, save the directories and files listed below.

Description

Directory of file

Directory of configuration files

<SIM>/config/

Shared OpenSSL certificate directory

hp/sslshare/

Audit file

<SIM>/logs/mx.log

Program updates (required if HP SIM is to be reinstalled)

<SIM>/patch

Certificate used by the Command Line Interface (CLI)

bin/servercert.pem

CLI configuration file

bin/cliclientconfig.cfg

(if existing)

<SIM>/installpsp

(if existing)

<SIM>/swmaint

(optional) Contains job result output

<SIM>/output

2.

Save any existing user-supplied (custom) files contained in the HP SIM directory tree such as tool definition
files (TDEFs), Management Information Bases (MIBs), sign in prompt, actions, and so on.

3.

Save any custom support packs used by the HP Version Control Repository Manager.

4.

Save any data files corresponding to any plug-in utilities used with HP SIM. See the documentation of
the applicable plug-in utility for actual file name and location.

5.

From the Windows Start menu, open Microsoft SQL Enterprise Manager.

6.

In the tree displayed in the left panel, expand the Microsoft SQL Servers branch and SQL group. If
the server is not listed where the HP SIM database is located, the Register SQL Server Wizard can
be invoked by right-clicking SQL server group and selecting New SQL Server Registration to bring
up the Register SQL Server Wizard window. This procedure assumes the desired server is already
listed and that the wizard will not be required.

7.

Select the server where the HP SIM database is located. From the Tools menu, select Backup database.
In the dialog box that appears, select the database named Insight_v*, and select Database -
complete

as the backup option.

8.

In the Destination field, click Add, select a location (such as disk or tape) for storing the backup copy
of the database, and click OK to initiate the backup.

Restoring the SQL server database from a backup

1.

If performing a reinstallation of HP SIM, see the

HP Systems Insight Manager installation and configuration

guide for Windows for instructions. If not performing a reinstallation of HP SIM, proceed to step 6.

Note: HP SIM must be re-installed with the same user account that was used previously. If a local was
used, the host name must remain the same.

2.

Reinstall the WMI mapper, OpenSSH (and previous keys used), and System Management Homepage
(SMH) components if needed.
