IPDS Input Function

This section explains about the IPDS input function.

Stream Mode

In the stream mode, two recovery modes are provided for recover upon jam or other error
occurrence. These recovery modes are automatically switched over according to the use of
extended spool upon queue setting.

When this mode is selected, the IPDS input function directly prints the received data without
loading it in the system spool. If the “extended spool” to operate the system without stopping
as far as possible, however, printing does not start unless the specified buffer size is reached.

Host recovery mode

This mode enables system operation equivalent to that of IBM’s IPDS printer.

If any equipment error like paper jam, which requires printer resetting, occurs, an exception
indicating the event is notified to the IPDS client, and the print data lost by resetting is sent
from the IPDS client after recovery of the system error. Jobs managed on the IPDS client side
are assumed to have been stacked upon ejection of all pages by this system, and the
succeeding processing (of pages from the spool, etc.) starts jobs. The jobs, therefore, are stored
on the IPDS client side until all pages in the job are ejected.

Printer recovery mode

This mode starts printing after system recovery upon occurrence of an error like paper jam by
using the "extended spool" for non-stop operation of this system.

When this mode is selected, occurrence of a hardware error is not notified to the IPDS client
(with notification of the Not Ready status only), and printing starts after recovery within this
system. The job managed on the IPDS client side is printed upon loading to the "extended
spool" in this system, which is regarded as completion of printing or stacking, followed by job
post-treatment (purge from the spool, etc.). If Save after printing is instructed as job post-
processing, the job may be held until the end of printing inspection. (PSF for OS/390,
