Bluetooth Limitations

Bluetooth can be thought of as a short-range radio link. As with any
radio link of this type, communications can be interrupted by a
number of reasons, including, but not limited to:

• The operating range between the devices is exceeded. (The

Bluetooth range is limited to approximately 10 meters.)

• Another powerful radio signal is broadcast near an active

Bluetooth device.

• An object, such as your body, physically blocks the radio

signal.

When the Bluetooth radio signal is lost, the results in the software
are not predictable and there is potential for a system crash,
requiring a hard reset. (See Recovering from Signal Loss, below.)

Because of these limitations, it is suggested that Bluetooth only be
used when the following criteria are met:

• Bluetooth should only be used during RTK GPS data

collection where constant communication between the
Bluetooth devices is least critical.

• Bluetooth should only be used while the data collector is

physically attached to the rod, which removes the possibility
that the range limitation will be exceeded.

Warning: It is not recommended that Bluetooth communication be
used during static GPS occupation, or while logging GPS data to use
for post processing. Both of these scenarios require constant and
reliable communications between the data collector and the receiver.
In these situations, a cable should be used for communication.
