must be removed from the instrument for recharg-
ing.

Rechargeable nickel cadmium cells may be employed, but have a
shorter operating period. Zinc carbon batteries are NOT recommended.

The end of battery life is signalled when the output falls to approximately

3.6 V. At this point the battery ikon on the display will be hollow
and will start to blink. Approximately 30 minutes later when the voltage
has fallen to 3.2 V, the "BATTERIES TOO LOW TO CONTINUE" mes-
sage will be displayed and all processing and logging cease.

If a run is in progress, it will be completed up to this point and results
stored exactly as if

had been pressed. Then the instrument enters

a low power mode until either the user presses

, or the battery volt-

age starts to fail, at which point it switches itself OFF. This prevents er-
ronious results being stored when power is failing.

Once the automatic switch off sequence has occurred, the instrument
can be restarted only by replacing the batteries and pressing

.

As a leakage of battery fluid can cause considerable damage, remove
any leaking or unserviceable batteries as soon as they are discovered.
The batteries should also be removed when the instrument is to be
stored for a prolonged period. Incorrect installation, handling, operation,
and disposal of batteries can be dangerous. Always follow the battery
manufacturers recommendations and if in doubt, seek the advice of a
specialist.

When measurements are required over long periods, it is recommended
that both of the sound level meters be powered directly from an external
6 - 15 V DC supply (a car battery for example) applied between line 6
and line 4 (ground) of the auxiliary socket (see Section 5.2).

IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO REMOVE THE INTERNAL BATTERIES.
