Chapter 6: The Wet Grain

Tip

Start with the default setting and adjust according to how fast the loading mechanism fills your dryer wet
bin. As the dryer unloads dry grain, an appropriately set load delay ends before the level of wet grain drops
below the top of the plenum chamber.

Validating Incoming Moisture and Temperature Readings

Using a reliable grain testing device, you can validate the incoming moisture and temperature each time a
batch of grain is loaded to ensure that onscreen wet sensor readings are accurate.

CAUTION

Always use extreme caution when working around augers and auxiliary conveyors
because they can start automatically.

To validate wet sensor readings:

1. Obtain a sample of the wet grain before a batch is loaded into the dryer wet bin.

2. Using a reliable grain testing device, measure the sample’s moisture content and temperature and

note the results.

IMPORTANT: When testing your grain, be sure to use a reliable, well-calibrated grain testing device

that you are familiar with. If you are using a portable tester, always make sure that its
battery is charged prior to testing because an uncharged battery can cause inaccurate
readings. Always refer to the grain tester’s documentation for details.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 at least three times and average the results.

4. Compare your averaged results with those displayed onscreen. If necessary, adjust as follows:

a. From the menu pane, click Load→Wet Sensor Calibration.

b. Set the following parameters:

Incoming Grain Moisture — The wet grain’s actual moisture level (%).

Incoming Grain Temperature — The wet grain’s actual temperature (°F; °C)

Once measured, the actual average moisture of the wet grain is 27%, yet the value displayed
onscreen is 25%. Enter 27 to maintain consistency between readings.

NOTE: During the drying phase, make sure to validate the wet grain’s moisture and temperature at least

once a day.
