Chapter 8: The Staged Batch Drying Process

Grain Setpoint 1 — The grain temperature that must be reached to make the plenums use the
second group of temperature setpoints.

Grain Setpoint 2 — The grain temperature that must be reached to end the drying phase.

Let’s assume that you enter the following values:

• Grain setpoint 1 of 85°F

• Grain setpoint 2 of 90°F

• Cooling timer of 18 minutes

• Unload timer of 10 minutes

• Plenum setpoints 1 of 220°F (for ease of explanation, this example assumes that all plenums use the

same setpoint)

• Plenum setpoints 2 of 170°F (for ease of explanation, this example assumes that all plenums use the

same setpoint)

The drying phase starts when the load auger fill switch is activated. At the beginning of this phase, all fans
and heaters are on so that the plenums can reach a temperature of 220°F. Once the grain temperature
reaches 85°F, the heat intensity decreases so that the plenum temperature can drop to 170°F. This new
plenum temperature is maintained until the grain temperature reaches 90°F and then heaters stop.

Once the heaters are off, the fans continue running for another 18 minutes to cool the hot grain and then
stop. Once the cooling phase ends, the unload auger runs for 10 minutes to discharge the dry and cool
grain into an external storage bin.

After You Finish

Now that the control scheme is set, complete the procedure on drying grain in staged batch mode (see

Drying Grain in Staged Batch, page 63

).
