Installing the Refillable Refrigerant

Tank

WARNING!

ALWAYS WEAR GOGGLES WHEN WORKING WITH REFRIG-
ERANTS. CONTACT WITH REFRIGERANTS MAY CAUSE
INJURY. USE ONLY AUTHORIZED 50-POUND (23 KILO-
GRAMS) REUSABLE REFRIGERANT TANKS. USE OF OTHER
TANKS COULD CAUSE PERSONAL INJURY AND WILL VOID
THE WARRANTY.
Before operating, read and follow the
instructions and warnings in the manual.
PURGING AND EVACUATING THE TANK
For the first tank installation, purge nitrogen and pull a vacuum
on the tank for five minutes

before adding refrigerant. Then

follow the instructions in “Adding Refrigerant to the Tank.”
1. A new tank comes with a dry nitrogen charge of 10 to 15 psi to

keep it clean and dry during shipment. Before installing a
new tank on the unit, purge its nitrogen charge by opening
either valve on the tank. Vent the pressure to the atmosphere,
then close the valve.

2. Place the tank on the scale platform at the rear of the unit.

Place the bottom lip of the tank around the outside diameter of
the stand-off welded to the platform. This centers the tank
automatically. Loosely fasten the strap around the tank to
prevent it from tipping over. Do not tighten the tank strap too
tightly or the scale accuracy may be affected.

WARNING!

Some automotive fuel systems use a

fitting. Connecting your air conditioning service or recovery/
recycling equipment to this fitting can result in cross-contamina-
tion of either the fuel system or the air conditioning service
equipment. These conditions can be potentially dangerous due
to the flammable characteristics of gasoline. Always refer to your
vehicle manual prior to connection.
CAUTION! Some tanks have slightly different valve configura-
tions. Be sure to connect the red hose to the red GAS (vapor)
valve and connect the blue hose to the blue LIQUID valve.
3. Attach the blue (low side) hose from the low side port

in the

upper right corner on the back of the unit to the elbow on the
new tank.

4. Attach the red hose from the back of the unit to the red GAS

(vapor) valve on the new tank.

5. Attach the blue hose from the back of the unit

near the tank to

the blue LIQUID valve on the new tank.

6. Close both valves on the tank, and open the low side valve

on the control panel. Pull a vacuum (five minutes minimum)
on the tank by simultaneously pressing the SHIFT/RESET and
ENTER keys, then press “1” on the keypad. The vacuum
pump starts and runs continuously until you press any other
key. Return to the regular display mode by pressing SHIFT/
RESET again.

7. Disconnect the blue (low side) hose from the elbow of the tank

and connect the yellow hose from the back of the unit to the
elbow of the new tank.

Note: To recycle or recharge, you must have several pounds of
refrigerant in the tank. Therefore, when installing an empty 50-
pound (23 kilograms) tank, you should add new refrigerant to the
tank, as described below.
ADDING REFRIGERANT TO THE TANK
Once the tank is installed, follow the instructions below for
adding refrigerant to the tank.
1. Connect the yellow flexible adapter supplied with the unit to

the blue LIQUID valve of the source tank (if you are using a
non-refillable tank, invert the source tank to transfer refrigerant
to the new tank). Connect the blue LIQUID hose from the
back of the unit to the yellow flexible adapter.

Note: The blue LIQUID hose is the blue hose normally attached

to the tank’s blue LIQUID valve.
2. Open the red GAS (vapor) valve on the tank installed on the

unit, and open the appropriate valve on the source tank.

Note: Transferring refrigerant from the source tank through the
unit and into the new tank ensures you are using clean, dry
refrigerant.
3. Press the SHIFT/RESET and ENTER keys on the keypad to

access the diagnostic mode, then press “2” to begin transfer-
ring refrigerant. The display shows the message “ADD” for
about two seconds, then shows the amount of refrigerant
transferred. Transfer terminates automatically when the tank
contains 30 pounds (13.6 kilograms) of refrigerant or when
the source tank has been pulled to 17 in. Hg. This process
takes about 30 minutes and can be interrupted at any time by
pressing HOLD/CONT once to interrupt and again to resume
the operation.

WARNING!

CONNECTING HOSES TO THE WRONG PORTS MAY CAUSE
PERSONAL INJURY OR MAY DAMAGE THE EQUIPMENT.
CHECK YOUR A/C SYSTEM OPERATING MANUAL FOR THE
CORRECT HOOKUP.
4. Close the blue LIQUID valve on the source tank and

carefully

remove the blue LIQUID hose from the yellow adapter.
Remove the yellow adapter from the source tank.

5. Reconnect the blue LIQUID hose from the back of the unit to

the blue LIQUID valve on the tank installed on the unit, then
open that tank’s blue LIQUID valve.

The unit is ready for use. Any non-condensible gases contained
in the tank will be removed during the recycling sequence.
