Reading the displayed volume

NOTE: This section is a detailed look at reading the output volume display on the front

panel of the switcher. If you do not need to read the exact value of the volume
setting, skip this section

.

There are 65 steps of volume attenuation, with 1 dB per step (button push).

z

z

At maximum attenuation, no input buttons are lit, 64 dB of attenuation is applied,
and the audio output is effectively muted.

z

z

At no attenuation, all input buttons are lit and the output volume is equal to the input
signal plus any gain or attenuation that is applied to that specific input using the input
audio level adjustment (see “

Viewing and Adjusting the Input Audio Level

”).

The input buttons light sequentially to indicate the approximate volume of the selected
output. Volume is defined as a percentage of the input audio signal that is applied to the
output. From 0% of volume, the first Esc (

>

) button push applies 5.5% of the input audio

signal and the Input 1 button lights. From 5.5% on, each Esc (

>

) button push applies 1.5%

more of the input audio signal to the output and the number of lit output buttons increases:

z

z

Push Esc (

>

) button again — 5.5% + 1.5% = 7% volume, indicated by the Input 2

button lit.

z

z

Push Esc (

>

) button twice more — 7% + 1.5% + 1.5% = 10% volume, indicated by

the Input 1 through Input 4 button lit.

z

z

Push Esc (

>

) button nineteen more times — 10% + (19 times 1.5%) = 38.5%

volume, indicated by the Input 1 through Input 23 buttons lit.

When all input buttons are lit, the audio output is 100% of the audio input level.
Another way to view the volume level is to think in terms of the attenuation that is applied
to the output. Attenuation is indicated by the lit input buttons: when fewer input buttons
are lit, attenuation is greater (and the volume is quieter).

z

z

At minimum volume, all input buttons are unlit or background illuminated and 64 dB of
attenuation is applied to the output. The audio output is effectively muted.

z

z

The first step of volume increase causes the Input 1 button to light. Attenuation is
reduced by 1 dB (63 dB of attenuation is applied to the output).

z

z

The second step of volume increase reduces the attenuation by an additional 1 dB
(62 dB of attenuation is applied to the output). (The Input 2 button lights.)

z

z

Successive steps of volume increase cause consecutive buttons to light. Each consecutive
lit button indicates a full 1 dB of attenuation reduction.

z

z

The volume indications of the buttons are additive.

z

z

At full volume, no attenuation is applied to the output and all input buttons are lit
steadily.

See the table

on the next page to read the volume display for each display scheme.
